Fire resistance doors: frequently asked questions

Got a question about fire resistance doors? You may find your answer here. If not, ask our team.
    1

    What is a fire-rated door?

A fire-rated door is a specially engineered door set that has been independently tested and certified to hold back fire for a specified time.

When exposed to intense heat, the door and its intumescent seals expand, closing any gaps around the frame. This slows the spread of the fire, giving people time to evacuate and protecting your assets until the fire service arrives.

    2

Do I need fire-rated doors in my building?

Most commercial, industrial and public buildings are legally required to have fire-rated doors. The same is true of apartment blocks.

These doors form part of your passive fire protection system. The number and types of fire doors you need will be described in your fire risk assessment.

    3

    What FD ratings are available?

Fire doors are available with FD30, FD60, FD90, FD120 and FD240 ratings. This means they can withstand fire for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, two hours or four hours.

You can get timber fire doors with an FD rating of FD30 to FD120. You can get steel fire doors with an FD rating of FD30 to FD240.

    4

How do I know a fire resistance door is properly certified?

A certified steel fire door carries a certification label — usually fixed to the top edge of the door leaf. This label provides details of the testing scheme used and the door’s FD rating. Always ask your supplier for proof of certification to ensure your doors are fully compliant.

    5

Can anyone fit a fire-resistant door?

No. Fire-resistant doors should be fitted by specialists with the right training and experience. This ensures compliance with UK fire safety regulations — and it means you can be confident your door will work properly in the event of a fire.

    6

Do FDS fire-resistant doors come with frames and hardware?

Yes. We supply our fire-resistant doors as full door sets, including fire-rated frames, hinges, closers, locks, signage and any other specified hardware. This ensures your doors are compliant, reliable and ready to install.

    7

Do FDS fire-resistant doors come with a warranty?

Absolutely. Our fire resistance doors come with a one-year warranty as standard.
