Steel fire doors

Why choose FDS steel fire doors?

Our steel fire doors offer unbeatable protection against flames and smoke. They’re available in a range of FD ratings — from FD30 to FD240.

Each door is constructed with a reinforced steel frame and core, and fitted with intumescent strips that expand when exposed to heat, sealing the gap between the door and the frame.

Beyond fire safety, these doors provide a robust defence against break-ins. They’re also designed for heavy-duty use and require minimal upkeep, making them a cost-effective and durable solution.

These metal fire doors are particularly suited to high-security areas of your building, including:

  • Data centres
  • Server rooms
  • Utility closets
  • External entrances

Fire-rated steel doors: frequently asked questions

Here are the questions we get asked most often about our fire-rated steel doors.
    1

What is a steel fire-rated door?

A steel fire-rated door is a specially engineered door set that has been independently tested and certified to hold back fire and smoke for a specified time. When exposed to intense heat, the door and its intumescent seals expand, closing any gaps around the frame. This slows the spread of flames and smoke, giving people time to evacuate safely.

    2

Do I need fire-rated doors in my business premises?

Most commercial, industrial, and public buildings require fire-rated doors by law. These doors form part of your passive fire protection system, with the number and types of fire doors needed set out in your fire risk assessment.

    3

What FD ratings are available for steel doors?

Steel doors offer the best possible fire protection. They are available with FD30, FD60, FD90, FD120 and FD240 ratings. This means they can withstand fire and smoke for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, two hours or four hours.

    4

How do I know a fireproof steel door is properly certified?

Every certified steel fire door carries a certification label — usually fixed to the top edge of the door leaf. This label provides details of the testing scheme used and confirms the FD rating. Always ask your supplier for proof of certification to ensure your doors are fully compliant.

    5

What’s the difference between timber and steel fire doors?

Both timber fire doors and steel fire doors are far more effective than a standard door at resisting the spread of smoke and flames.

Steel doors, however, tend to achieve high FD ratings and are more robust against forced entry, heavy use and external weather conditions.

Timber doors are typically chosen for internal use, particularly in offices, schools or healthcare settings where appearance is also a priority.

    6

What’s the difference between a steel fire-rated door and a steel fire exit door?

A steel fire-rated door is built to contain fire for a set period of time.

A steel fire exit door, on the other hand, is designed primarily for escape. It features panic hardware — like a push bar or touch pad — that allows people to exit the building quickly in an emergency.

You can get fire exit doors that are also fire-rated. But this isn’t a requirement unless stated specifically in your fire risk assessment.

    7

Can anyone fit a fire door?

No. Fire doors must be fitted by specialists with the right training and experience. Even small errors — like using the wrong hinges or misaligning the seals — can make a door non-compliant and prevent it from working properly in a fire.

    8

Do FDS fire-rated doors come with frames and hardware?

Yes. We supply our fire-rated steel doors as full door sets, including the frame, hinges, closers, locks, signage and any other specified hardware. This ensures your doors are compliant and ready to install.

    9

Do FDS steel doors come with a warranty?

Absolutely. Our fire-rated steel doors come with a one-year warranty as standard.
