Wooden fire doors: frequently asked questions

Here are some of the questions we hear most often about our wooden fire-rated doors.
    1

What is a wooden fire-rated door?

A wooden fire-rated door set has been tested by an independent, third-party organisation to ensure it can withstand fire or smoke for a set period of time. Under high temperatures, the door expands to create a seal with the frame. It prevents the spread of fire and smoke, giving people more time to escape.

    2

Do I need fire-rated doors in my business premises?

Yes. Most commercial, industrial and public buildings require them by law. Fire-rated doors are a key component of a passive fire protection system. The number and type of fire-rated doors you need depend on your premises and your fire risk assessment.

    3

Can timber fire doors look like normal doors?

Yes, absolutely. Timber fire doors are available with a variety of panel, glazing and finish options, and can look just like normal wooden doors. They can blend seamlessly with the interior décor of your business premises. The only visible difference between a fire door and a normal door is the door closer and fire door signage.

    4

What FD ratings are available for wooden doors?

Wooden doors are available with FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120 ratings. This means they can withstand fire and smoke for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes or two hours.

    5

How do I know a wooden fire door is properly certified?

A certified wooden fire door will carry proof of testing and certification. When checking a fire door, look for certification labels — usually on the top edge of the door. These labels provide details of the certification scheme and the door’s FD rating.

    6

What’s the difference between timber and steel fire doors?

Wood fire doors and steel fire doors both offer better protection against fire and smoke than a standard door.

However, steel fire doors are available with higher FD ratings than timber doors. They are also better suited to industrial or external use, where strength and durability are a priority.

Fire-rated wooden doors are a type of internal fire door. They can be designed to match interior décor and are commonly used inside offices, schools, hospitals and other workplaces.

    7

Can any carpenter fit a fire door?

No. Fire doors aren’t like standard doors. To ensure they work properly in case of a fire, they should be fitted by someone trained and experienced in fire door fitting. Even small mistakes, like trimming too much from the edge or using uncertified hinges, can make the door non-compliant.

    8

Do FDS fire-rated doors come with frames and hardware?

Yes, wooden fire doors from FDS come with everything you need to ensure fire safety. This includes the door, frame, hinges, closers, handles, locks and signage.

    9

Do FDS timber doors come with a warranty?

Yes, our wood fire-rated doors come with a one-year warranty as standard.
