FD30 fire door specification

Available in a wide range of sizes and finishes, our FD30 doors are engineered to withstand fire for at least 30 minutes.

They’re thicker than a standard door, typically 44 to 45mm — and they’re made with specialist, fire resistant materials that maintain their integrity under extreme heat.

Door set components — the frame, hinges, closer, glazing, locks and letterboxes — perform to the same FD30 rating.

And all doors are independently tested and certified, so you can be confident they meet their advertised fire rating and UK fire safety standards.

FD30 and FD30S: what’s the difference?

Standard FD30 fire doors provide 30 minutes of fire resistance. FD30S doors go a step further.

The S stands for smoke, and these doors provide 30 minutes of protection against both flames and cold smoke.

Smoke inhalation is one of the leading causes of fire casualties, often more dangerous than the fire itself. For this reason, FD30S door sets are recommended in most applications, particularly along escape routes.

At FDS, we provide both FD30 and FD30S fire doors and can advise you on the most appropriate product for your premises.

Where are FD30 doors required?

The number, location and fire-resistance rating of the fire doors you need depends on a variety of factors, including the height, layout, usage and occupancy of your building.

Fire door requirements for your building should be laid out in your fire risk assessment, which should be based on UK fire safety legislation and building regulations.

If you don’t have a fire risk assessment, or you’re unsure if your existing fire doors are enough, a fire safety survey will give you all the expert advice you need.

    FAQs

    1

    What does FD30 mean?

FD30 is a fire door rating. It means the door has been tested and certified to withstand fire for at least 30 minutes. This gives people time to escape, and limits the spread of fire and smoke through a building.

    2

How do FD30 fire doorsets work?

Under high temperatures, intumescent seals around the door expand to fill the gap between the door leaf and the frame. This creates a barrier against fire and smoke.

The door itself is constructed from fire-resistant materials that maintain their integrity for the rated period. But for a door to perform correctly, every component — the door leaf, frame, hinges, closer — must be correctly specified and in good working order.

    3

Do I need FD30 or FD60 fire doors?

It depends on your building, its layout, usage and risk profile.

FD30 door sets are suitable for low-risk environments. FD60 fire doors — providing 60 minutes of fire resistance — are required in higher-risk locations or larger buildings.

Your fire risk assessment should specify the required rating. You can also find details of fire door requirements in The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 and Approved Document B.

If you’re still unsure, book a fire safety survey with FDS. Our accredited technicians will assess your building and tell you which fire door rating you need to meet fire safety regulations.

    4

What is the standard door thickness for an FD30 door?

The standard thickness of an FD30 fire door is 44 to 45 millimetres — significantly thicker than a standard internal door.

    5

What FD30 door sizes are available?

Because we manufacture bespoke FD30 fire doors, we can build doors to fit almost any space. We supply single, double and leaf-and-a-half fire doors. For larger openings and open plan spaces, fire curtains or FD30 roller shutters may be a more suitable choice.

    6

What FD30 door materials are available?

We supply and manufacture timber, steel and composite FD30 doors. Timber — including oak — is a popular choice for residential and commercial interiors. Composite and steel are more common for external applications or higher traffic environments.

    7

Who can install an FD30 fire door?

Only trained and certified fire door installers should fit fire doors. Even minor errors can affect performance in a real fire. All FDS commercial fire door installers are fully accredited and work to UK fire safety standards.

    8

How often should 30-minute fire doors be inspected?

The responsible person at your business should carry out regular checks — looking for damage, checking seals and ensuring closers are functioning correctly. You should also book a professional fire door service at least once every six months. This keeps your fire doors operational and compliant.

    9

Do FDS fire doors come with a warranty?

Yes. All FDS fire doors come with a one-year warranty as standard.
