Fire regulations in schools: where are fire doors required?

According to UK fire safety regulations, schools must be divided into fire compartments — separate sections that contain fire and smoke for a set period. Fire doors are required at every opening in a compartment wall.

This means that fire doors are essential for electrical plant rooms and at the entrance to kitchens and catering facilities. They should be used along stairwells and along corridors more than 30 metres long to protect escape routes.

Depending on the risk profile of your building, fire doors may also be needed for:

Science labs
Where flammable liquids and chemicals are stored
Workshops
Where wood shavings pose a fire safety risk
Storage spaces
That contain particularly flammable materials, including drama scenery, PE mats and soft toys

Fire risk assessment in schools

Making sense of the regulations for your education setting.

Fire safety regulations for schools are complicated. The right fire doors for your education setting depend on a wide range of factors, including your building’s layout, occupancy and risk profile.

A fire risk assessment — carried out by a competent person — helps you identify the places where fire doors are needed, and whether existing doors and escape routes are adequate.

At FDS, our accredited technicians carry out fire safety surveys for educational premises across the UK. We’ll assess your building, identify any gaps in your fire protection and give you a clear, practical plan for ensuring fire safety compliance.

Bespoke fire doors, designed to fit your school and its students

The best fire doors for schools offer more than just fire protection.

They also fit the design and day-to-day reality of your school buildings.

All FDS school fire doors are durable. They’re resistant to scratches, stains and impact — and engineered to withstand heavy usage.

They’re also available in a wide range of colours and finishes. This can be useful for colour-coding departments, year groups or corridors, making it easier for people to navigate your premises.

Other optional fire door features include:

Acoustic insulation
To prevent noise from one classroom from disrupting another.
Finger protection
To keep small fingers from becoming trapped in door mechanisms.
Hygienic finishes
To support easy cleaning and infection control.
Automated door operators
For improved traffic flow and accessibility.

School fire door installation

The right fit. The right documentation. Minimal disruption.

A fire door that isn’t installed properly won’t perform when it matters. That’s why fire door installation in a school should never be left to anyone other than a trained, certified professional.

Our installation team has years of experience fitting fire doors in schools and other educational settings. We fit doors to UK fire safety standards and provide all relevant documentation.

We also know that a school can’t simply close its doors for a few days while work takes place. So we plan around you — fitting fire doors during holidays, evenings or weekends wherever possible, to keep disruption to staff and students to an absolute minimum.

Fire doors in schools: a quick guide to maintenance

UK fire safety guidance states that you should inspect fire-rated doors and fire exits regularly.
  • Daily checks. Check that escape routes and fire exits are not locked or blocked. Check that fire exits are closed.
  • Monthly checks. Check that fire doors are in good working order — they close correctly, and frames and seals are intact.
  • Six-monthly checks. A thorough inspection by a competent, suitably trained person.

FDS fire safety experts can conduct six-monthly checks for you.

As part of a maintenance package, our certified technicians inspect your fire doors and carry out repairs where needed. So you can be confident that everything is in proper working order.

    FAQs

    1

    How do fire doors work?

Fire doors are constructed from fire-resistant materials that maintain their integrity for the rated period.

Under high temperatures, intumescent seals around the door expand to fill the gap between the door leaf and the frame, creating a barrier against fire and smoke.

For a door to perform correctly, every component — the door leaf, frame, hinges, closer — must be correctly specified and in good working order.

    2

What fire safety regulations apply to schools?

The primary legislation is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2026, which applies to all non-domestic premises, including schools.

Schools must carry out a fire risk assessment, implement appropriate fire safety measures — including fire doors where required — and ensure those measures are maintained.

    3

What is a fire risk assessment for schools, and who carries it out?

A fire risk assessment is a systematic review of a building’s fire risks, its existing protection measures and escape routes.

In schools, it should be carried out by a competent person — someone with the knowledge, skills and experience to assess the fire risks of an educational environment. If you lack this expertise within your school, it’s best to hire a certified fire safety specialist who can conduct a fire risk assessment for you.

    4

What fire door sizes are available?

Because we manufacture bespoke fire doors, we can build doors to fit almost any opening. We supply single, double and leaf-and-a-half fire door sets. For larger, open plan spaces where a door isn’t practical, fire curtains can be a more appropriate choice.

    5

What are the regulations for fire exit doors in schools?

Fire exit doors must open in the direction of travel and be easy for everyone to open. There must be enough fire exits for the size of the building and the number of occupants — and the width of exit doors should reflect the risk level and the number of people using them. Vision panels are also recommended where more than 60 people are expected to use a final exit.

    6

Who can install fire doors for schools?

Only trained and certified fire door installers should fit school fire doors. Even small installation errors can affect the door’s performance in a fire. All FDS installers are fully accredited and experienced in educational settings.

    7

How often should fire doors in schools be inspected?

You should conduct daily checks of escape routes and monthly checks of fire door operation and seals. You should also book a professional inspection at least once every six months.

FDS offers scheduled fire door maintenance plans for schools, ensuring inspections are carried out on time and any issues are addressed promptly.

    8

Do FDS fire doors come with a warranty?

Yes. All FDS fire doors come with a one-year warranty as standard.
